Ecopana is a non-profit environmental organisation established in 2015 in Kosovo, created with a clear mission: to protect nature through evidence-based action, strong civil society engagement, and cooperation with institutions at all levels. Since its establishment, Ecopana has grown into a key national partner of WWF Adria, contributing to the implementation of regional and European conservation strategies at country level.
About Ecopana🌿
Our Work and Impact
From the very beginning, Ecopana has focused on protected areas, rivers, biodiversity conservation, and public participation, addressing long-standing gaps in environmental governance in Kosovo. One of the organisation’s earliest and most significant contributions was its role in the formal designation of Germia as a Protected Landscape, transforming it from a city park into a legally protected area. This work included the first inventory of Germia, initiation of its management planning process, and active engagement of civil society, institutions, and experts.
Over the years, Ecopana has expanded its scope to address emerging environmental challenges. The organisation has played a pioneering role in river restoration, introducing dam removal as a viable and necessary solution for the first time in Kosovo. Through projects such as dam removal in Mirusha and basin-wide barrier mapping in the White Drin, Ecopana has laid the groundwork for restoring free-flowing rivers and improving water governance.
Biodiversity conservation is another core pillar of Ecopana’s work. The organisation has been instrumental in establishing Kosovo’s first institutional framework for large carnivore management, including the creation of intervention and coordination teams, professional training, and alignment with EU standards for human–wildlife coexistence.
Partnerships and Capacity
Ecopana’s work is characterised by strong partnerships with international organisations, national and local institutions, agencies, municipalities, and academia, including close cooperation with the University of Prishtina. While maintaining a small core team, Ecopana collaborates with a wide network of external experts, researchers, and volunteers, ensuring flexibility, scientific credibility, and strong field presence.
Today, Ecopana is recognised as a trusted actor in environmental protection in Kosovo – bridging science, policy, and communities to deliver lasting impact for nature and people.
Mission
At Ecopana, our mission is to protect Kosovo’s nature and inspire communities to take meaningful action for a sustainable future. Through a combination of conservation projects, environmental education, and community engagement, we strive to preserve biodiversity, restore ecosystems, and foster a culture of environmental responsibility. By collaborating with local communities, schools, and partners like WWF Adria, we aim to create lasting impact, ensuring that both people and nature can thrive together for generations to come.
