This landmark project introduced dam removal as a practical river restoration solution in Kosovo. Ecopana conducted ecological and hydromorphological assessments of the Mirusha River, combined with strong community engagement and public awareness.
The project generated missing scientific data and increased public understanding of free-flowing rivers. It also led to the discovery of Eratigena mirusha, a newly described spider species.
Media attention and community consultations shifted public perception toward river restoration. The initiative demonstrated that dam removal is feasible, beneficial, and socially acceptable, setting a precedent for future river restoration projects nationwide.
